I operate a portrait studio in Honolulu, Hawaii, and up until about five years ago I used PC cords to connect my camera to my main strobe in studio. Then a friend brought an inferred transmitter and receiver for me to try out. What a revelation and feeling of freedom that gave me!

I used the inferred system for about a year, then invested in a set of Pocket Wizards. Pocket Wizards use radio waves to trigger flash units. The big advantage to radio waves over inferred is that with radio waves the receivers do not need to be in line of sight.

The Pocket Wizards come as a set of one transceiver and one receiver. You can buy any combination you want, and the transceivers both transmit the signal and will also act as a receiver.

Both transceiver and receivers are about 4 x 2.5 x 1 1/2 inches, and have a 2″ flexible, rubberized antennae built on. The transceiver attaches to the hot shoe of your camera, and the receivers are connected by a short cord and plug to the flash units. All operate on AA batteries.
