Photography is an incredible and powerful method of expression. The same tools that can capture and preserve precious memories of a graduation or a wedding can be used to document social conditions around the world. A powerful photograph can bring a tear to the eye or a smile to the face of its observer. Currently, digital SLR cameras are the standard in the imaging industry. Used by working professionals and by casual photographers alike, the digital SLR provides a high degree of functionality and capability for those looking to get the very most out of their photographs.
Digital SLR cameras hold a number of advantages over consumer point-and-shoot models. Most importantly, digital SLR cameras have a much larger image sensor than compact models, allowing for a high degree of creative control and image quality. Control over depth of field and selective focus, while possible with certain compact cameras, is considerably easier and more capable with SLR bodies. Enhanced performance in adverse lighting is another advantage of SLR cameras. Put simply, SLR cameras are considerably more capable than point-and-shoot models.
The one considerable downside to DSLR photography is portability. Compared to the compact cameras currently on the market, mainstream DLSRs are large and bulky in comparison. While it might be quite simple to carry along a point-and-shoot on a night out, keeping a Sony Alpha a700 in your pocket simply isn’t an option given the heft and size of the camera. Manufacturers such as Sony and Olympus, however, now offer compact interchangeable lens cameras that blur the lines between compact and SLR cameras and eliminate some of the compromises that each type of camera creates by design.

You have to love digital photography! I think the advent of digital cameras was huge step forward for photographers – amateur and professional. There’s now a wonderful variety of digital cameras available with all sorts of features. The problem is not lack of features, the problem (for many) is understanding which features are – or should be – important to their requirements. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to select the right camera, at the right price with the features you need.
When choosing your camera think about features in relation to the type of photography you do. Will you be taking pictures indoors or outdoors, do you take a lot of casual family scenes or fast action sport pictures? Maybe you want to take pictures in all of those situations. No problem, its still a matter of identifying the features that best meet the needs and making sure the camera has them. You will probably find that the more features you want the bigger the camera’s going to be. Keep that in mind if you had visions of a camera that slipped easily into your pocket.
Digital cameras at pretty much every level will offer optical and digital zoom features. I suggest you ignore the digital zoom. At first glance it may seem impressive but digital zoom results in really poor quality pictures. Stick with optical zoom, with anything between 5x and 8x giving very satisfactory results.

I happen to be a photography nut, I love taking video and home movies and when I discovered the new Kodak PlaysportZx3 waterproof Pocket Camcorder I just knew it was going to be great! I have a video camera and a digital still camera but Kodak has combined the two and added an amazing underwater feature, then rolled them into a soft touch, slip proof little does-it-all camcorder.
Image Quality
Because I love taking video so much the first thing I wanted to know is whether the image quality would be good or not. The standard 1920/1080p was not a disappointment, but there were no major improvements in technology here. Similar to other pocket camcorders, the picture can be a bit grainy if the lighting isn’t adequate or if you try to move the camera too quickly. However, Kodak gives you more quality settings than the competition, for example by using the 720p setting or the 720p/60fps; you can shoot better quality fast action video.
More Features
Also included is a “glare screen” setting that I found very useful outdoors in bright sunlight, when the colors get washed out or if I could not see the 2 inch LCD screen. Other features include a face detection and image stabilization. The PlaySport also takes decent quality 5 megapixel still photos, although it does not come with a flash so be sure to have adequate lighting.
Memory and Interface
The camera only comes with 128 MB of internal memory so I just bought a SDHC card. It accepts up to 32GB which can provide up to 10 hours of video. Perhaps my favorite feature is the ability to playback the video in HDTV. Kodak even includes the cable needed to hook up to your television, which is a money saver right off the bat. I love how easy it is to do and my kids love coming back from their games to watch the replays!
